So you want to pretty yourself up by making rings and necklaces and more powerful by cutting gems to put in your weapons and armor. Well straight from the beta test I'm here to tell you about the new crafting skill Jewelcrafting
Trainers:
First you must know where to go to learn this new skill so I'll list trainers.
Silvermoon City: Amin, at the end of the building in between The Walk Of Elders and The Royal Exchange.
The Exodar: Driaan, The Crystal Hall, First shop on the right as you enter.

What Equipment Will I Need?

A Jeweler's Kit is all you will need and can be had from a Jewelcrafting Supplier for 7 silver 20 copper.

You should also take up Mining and buy a pickaxe as buying your own ore and gems will cost far, far too much unless you have been a naughty player and bought thousands of gold from a farmer.

Also you will be limited to what is for sale on the auction house, so if you need something and don't have it and it's not for sale on the auction house, you won't have the ability to go get it yourself.
What is Prospecting?
It's a skill you get from the Jewelcrafting trainer at level 20 Jewelcrafting You can search a stack of 5 ore for gems but the ore will be destroyed. You may or may not find gems but you should always get metal powder that you can sell to vendors.
When can I prospect ores?

What about Silver, Gold, Truesilver, Dark Iron, and Eternium?
At this time you can not prospect these ores, you will get a message saying “There are no gems in this”.
What are socketed items?
Weapons and armor that have slots that cut gems can be placed in. Sockets are colored and can add a bonus if you place a matching colored gem in it.
For example you have a sword with a green and blue socket that gives +20 to stamina gem color bonus, if you place a green gem in the green socket and a blue gem in the blue socket you will receive the +20 to stamina bonus.
If you place a green gem in the green socket and a yellow gem in the blue socket you will not get the +20 to stamina bonus.
What is a meta socket?
It's a socket for meta gems. Meta gems have no color and will not prevent you from getting the gem color matching bonus.
For example you have the sword from above with it's green and blue socket but now with a meta socket. You can place a green and blue gem in the green and blue sockets and a meta gem in the meta socket and still get the +20 to stamina bonus.
Where as gems of one color tend to have the same type of stats meta gems have mixed stats. For example lets say blue gems are more for casters and will have things like intellect and or mana regeneration and green gems normally have stats like agility and a higher dodge rating, a meta gem can mix stats to have say +20 to intellect and +15 to dodge rating.
