Leatherworking And Skinning Guide

This is a guide for both Leatherworking and Skinning, since they compliement each other well. This does not mean you have to use Skinning with Leatherworking; you can do what ever you want. Is is simply because the items you get from Skinning can be used in Leatherworking. Now, Let's begin!

The Skinning profession allows the player to gather hides and other items for other production professions, such as leather working.

First thing you need to do is train to become a Skinner. Visit the closest skinning trainer. The location of the trainer will vary depending on what race you are. They can ususally be found in any of the major cities across the world, just ask a guard. Once you learn the skinning skill, immediately buy a skinning knife. There should be a trade supplies npc right near the skinner trainer. (I have done this profession a few times and I always seem to forget to buy the skinning knife!) Ultimately, without the skinning knife you can not skin animals. You can view all/any of your skills by opening up your abilities book. There you will find all skills and abilities for your character. Now that you are trained in skinning you should see a little skinning icon in your abilities book.

Presto! You are now an Apprentice Skinner! Now we need to find an animal to skin. Being a Tauren, I myself run around the outskirts of Bloodhoof Village. I can usually find many animals to skin that were already killed by other players. So wherever you are, find a place with a lot of other players around and just start searching for carcasses! You can also do it the old fashioned way and kill the animal with your own hands (or whatever weapon you wield!). Whichever way you go, to actually skin the animal all you have to do is right click on the dead animal. Be sure the animal is looted first, you cannot skin it if it has not been looted yet. After you right-click your character will begin skinning, a progress bar will pop up at the bottom. When the progress bar finishes a loot window will pop up with the goods inside. Now just grab the goods! That is all there is to skinning. Depending on your Skinning level you may have some trouble skinning higer lever animals. When you mouse over a skinnable object, a box in the lower right hand corner will pop-up with the name of the animal and it will say "skinnable" in either the color grey (you should have no problem at all skinning this, though you may just be getting scraps), green (you will skin it and will probably get some good stuff in the process), or red (there is a good chance you will fail). You may fail a few times, but if you do you can just repeat the process again.

Skinning is ranked in the following:

  • Apprentice Skinning
  • Journyman Skinning- requires level 50
  • Expert Skinning - requires level 125
  • Artisan Skinning - requires level 200

  • Now that you have some hides to work with lets take a look at the Leather Working Profession.

The Leatherworking profession allows the player to create Leather Armor and other items that they can either use for themselves or trade with other players and reap the profits.

To become a leatherworker, visit your local Leatherworking trainer. He/she should be right around where your Skinner trainer was. If you have any trouble finding them just ask a guard once again. Once you do find them, have them train you. You will need to be up to level five with your character though, that is the requirement for Apprentice Leatherworking. And this is how the rest break down:

  • Apprentice Leatherworking - require Character level 5
  • Journyman Leatherworking- requires level 50 and Character level 10
  • Expert Leatherworking - will let ya know
  • Artisan Leatherworking -will let ya know

So now you are a Leatherworker! First thing you should do is open up your abilities book and check out your new Leather Working icon! Go ahead and click on it! Drag it to your action bar if you want! The interface for Leather Working is very simple an intuitive. All your recipes are listed out and categorized for you, with each recipe showing you what ingredients you need to make the item. Now on to the tougher part, finding ingredients!

Let's talk about how to create items! Let's do a walk through on creating something. I chose Light Leather Pants. As you can see to create Light Leather pants, we need ten pieces of Light Leather, one piece of Cured Light Hide and one piece of Fine Thread. The light leather comes from skinning animals. The fine thread is sold by Trade Supplies Npc vendors. The cured hide, has a little different process. The cured hide is under another category in your Leather Working interface, under Trade goods. To create cured hide, you take hide that you have skinned off of an animal and salt. Then BAM! You have Cured hide! There are many recipes like that, turning so many pieces of light leather into medium leather and so on and so forth. Now I have all the required parts, now i just click create(a progress bar will pop up near the bottom of the screen) and my character will being creating it! Once the item is created it will appear in your inventory and you can do with it what ever you wish.

  • Leatherworking is a fun profession to have and a profitable one. Keep an eye out for npcs arounds the world that could be selling rare and unique Leatherworking recipes. Recipes can also drop of monsters around the world.
