Night Elves
Alzhara
Alzhara was the Queen of the nearly immortal Kalimdorei in the
time before the destruction of the Well of Eternity. She created
a palace of immense splendor on the shores of the well. It was
here that the Quel’dorei or “high borne” lived and served her.
Though she herself was not hated, the elitist Quel’dorei most
certainly were. Alzhara orderd the Quel’dorei to study the Well
and discern its purpose in the world. Eventually as time went
on, the Quel’dorei began to master primitive magic. Their belief
in their own superiority grew as their power increased. The
Well, which was contained the essence of all magic, chaos, was
slowly twisting the Night Elves who used it.
Alzhara reveled in the power the well granted her and eventually
she heard a call from beyond. Sargeras the Lord of Chaos and
father of the Burning Legion, sensed the power that emanated
from the well and sought it for himself. He courted the queen
and bent her to his will. She opened a portal and the Legion
poured into Azeroth for the first time. The felhounds, infernals
and Doom Guard destroyed her people but she did not care, she
and the Quel’dorei simply waited for the arrival of Sargeras.
Illidan Stormrage would warn her of his brother’s plan to kill
her and end their spell to bring Sargeras in to the world.
During the fight with Furion, Tyrande and the rebel forces, the
spell was broken. The chaos of the magic gone awry would send
ripples through the very soul of the world. The well would break
apart and collapse in on itself even as the one continent of
Kalimdor would break apart into the ones known today. Where once
was a landmass surrounding the massive lake known as the Well of
Eternity, there now was a handful of broken continents with a
Maelstrom of magical energies swirling in the sea between them.
Where the Well once stood only the Maelstrom remained.

Dath’Remar
A Quei’dorei who served under Alzhara, he longed for the embrace
of magic and all its consequences. He would grow to view the
Druids as weak and cowardly due to their refusal to embrace
magic. He would lead an attack on the Druids and eventually be
exiled along with all his followers. They would cross the sea
and eventually found the city of Quel’Thalas. The father of the
High Elves, he is not remembered kindly among the Kalimdorei.

Malfurion Stormrage
Malfurion studied the Well of Eternity as did all the
Quel’dorei. However, unlike most of them, Malfurion realized the
danger the power within the well presented. He watched as his
queen and her loyal Quel’dorei became corrupted and manipulated
by their thirst for its power. When Alzhara opened the gate for
the Legion, Furion would be one of the first to take up arms
against them.
A romance blossomed between he and the Priestess Tyrande. This
caused tension between he and his brother Illidan but all
quarrels seemed to be buried when they united to fight against
the Legion. The battles raged and the Night Elves seemed doomed
as long as the portal was kept open by the queen and her
minions. Furion even believed that it was the well itself that
was to blame and they must destroy it as well. Being unable to
give up magic and its embrace, Illidan betrayed Malfurion and
Tyrande as they tried to attack the queen.
Malfurion succeeded however, and was able to bring about the
destruction of the Well of Eternity. The cataclysm ripped apart
their homeland but rid them of the Legion. Malfurion would
gather what remained of the Kalimdorei and even the remnants of
the Quel’dorei and take them back to Mt.Hyjal which had luckily
survived the sundering of the continent. When they arrived they
discovered Illidan’s treachery as they witnessed the rebirth of
yet another Well.
Still loving his brother but knowing that nothing good would
befall his people as long as Illidan remained free, Malfurion
talked to Cenarius and they constructed a prison. Deep under the
crust of the world, in total darkness and far from the presence
of magic, Malfurion imprisoned his own brother and returned to
rebuild the homeland of his people. Forsaking the darker arts of
the Illidan and the Quel’dorei, the night elves learned Druidic
magics and helped to replant and renew their lands.
Awakened and disturbed by the cataclysmic destruction of the
Well, the dragons eventually came to investigate. Malfurion and
Tyrande talked to the greatest among them and they decided that
an enchantment was needed to guard against the return of the
legion. Alexstrasza, Ysera and Nozdormu helped create Nordrassil
the Tree of Life to stand guard over Mt.Hyjal and the Night
Elves. As its mighty branches scraped the sky, the druids
entered hibernation. In exchange for the powerful magics imbued
in the tree, the druids must give of themselves sentries of
their lives to sleep and live amongst the “Emerald Dream”, that
Ysera heralds from.
Malfurion and the Druids would wake and tend to the forests of
Ashenvale and then sleep again. The creatures of the forest such
as the Furbolgs and Quilboards returned and the nightelves
flourished. Eventually however, the Quel’dorei grew restless and
with the Dath Remar stirring the pot they soon began a revolt.
They longed for the power of magic and began to view the druids
as cowards for refusing to use it. Eventually they would attack
Ashenvale in an attempt to convince the druids to change their
minds. However, they had not practiced magic in centuries and
they were defeated by the druids. Furion and the rest of the
druids could not bare the thought of destroying so many of their
kin, so they opted to exile them instead.
As the last of the Quel’dorei, or High Elves as they had begun
to call themselves, left for other shores, Malfurion once more
entered the “Emerald Dream” leaving Tyrande to defend the
forest.

Illidan Stormrage
Illidan embraced the power of the well from the time he first
tapped it. He drank of its power as a man drinks of water in the
desert. It was life itself to him. His brother, Malfurion though
had discovered that with the power came a price. Though Illidan
was ready to pay it, Malfurion could not. At first Illidan stood
by his brother’s decision to rally a force to stop the queen. He
loved his brother and loved Tyrande perhaps even more. Yet when
he learned that Malfurion intended to destroy the well, he could
not bare the thought of life without magic’s caress.
He betrayed his brother and his secret love by warning the Queen
of their impending attack. Even though casting a mighty spell to
bring Sargeras in to the world, the Queen and her Quel’dorei
guards were ready for Furion and his allies. The battle cost
many lives and almost Tyrande’s as well. Not wanting to risk
losing the well or its power Illidan grabbed a few flasks of its
water and escaped before the battle caused the well to break
apart.
Illidan survived the cataclysm and made his way to a lake at the
base of the sacred Mt. Hyjal. There he poured the contents of
his vials into the lake. With its contents emptied into the
waters, the lake was sparked into becoming a new well of
eternity. When Malfurion and the rest of the nightelves found
Illidan they were shocked. They knew that the legion would now
have reason to return. For his crimes, Furion and Cenarious
crafted a cage for Illidan and imprisoned him in the darkness
far beneath the surface of the world.

Tyrande
A revered Priestess of the Moon, she has protected the
Kalemdorei lands for eons. When Tyrande and the very world
itself was in its infancy, she found herself torn between two
brothers. Malfurion and Illidan were both Quel’dorei, or High
Borns who served Queen Alzhara. When the Queen opened the portal
and allowed the Burning Legion’s armies to ravage their world,
Tyrande stood with Malfurion and Illidan to try and stop their
own Queen as well as the Legion’s army. It was during the war
that Malfurion’s noble spirit won over the Priestess and by the
end of it she knew that Illidan loved magic more than he could
ever love her.
After the destruction of the Well of Eternity, Tyrande helped
rebuild the Night Elf lands at the base of Mt Hyjal. She would
lose both the people she loved. Illidan to prison and Malfurion
to the hibernation that came with Ysera’s deal with the Druids.
With the birth of the World Tree, Malfurion and the rest of the
druids went into the period of hibernation, leaving Tyrande and
Cenarius to defend the forest. Under the care and protection of
Tyrande, the sleeping Druids and the Demi God Cenarius the lands
grew strong. Dath Remar and other High Born’s who still longed
for magic’s embrace would eventually lead a revolt against the
Druids and Tyrande’s warriors. Tyrande would be reunited with
her love Furion but it would be far to brief. The High Borns
were exiled and once more Malfurion would be called back to the
Emerald Dream to sleep away the centuries.
Time would pass and eventually a new threat would come to the
forest. Orcs and humans driven from their homelands by the
Scourge, began setting up camps within the Kalimdorei lands.
Gromm Hellscream ferocity surprised the Night Elves who had not
battled such foes in hundreds of years. Many Ancients fell to
the orcs as the slashed and burned their way deeper into the
forest. Cenarius came to Tyrande’s aid and with his help the
orcs had little chance of survival. However, the Legion knew
that some orcs still thirsted for the Chaos Curse of bloodlust
and made plans to give it to them once more. Tichondrius the
Dread Lord convinced the great Pit Lord Mannoroth to once more
give of his blood to corrupt the minds and souls of orcs. When
Gromm and his warriors drank of the defiled pool of water deep
within the forest, they were given the ability to wound the
formerly invulnerable Cenarius. The contingent of chaos infused
orcs destroyed the woods and cut down the Demi God.
The Night Elves found themselves in a dire situation. Orcs had
cut deeply into the forest. Humans had also started a settlement
as well. But the true danger was the Scourge and its arrival to
Kalimdor. The blight of the undead corrupted the forest. Even
the Ancients themselves were twisted into madness by it. Tyrande
and her warriors could not stand alone against these three
threats. She quickly began to awaken the slumbering Druids. With
Furion and the other Druids at her side there was hope, but she
wanted every ally she could find to save her beloved forest.
Though Furion objected she went deep into the earth and released
Illidan from his prison of darkness.
The three fought valiantly but all would have been lost if the
orcs and humans had not come to the Night Elves as allies. With
the guidance of Medivh, the three warring factions set a trap
for Archimonde at the base of the world tree. While Malfurion
organized the wisps of the forest, Tyrande organized the last
wall of defense against the Horde.
