Through a little warping of the space/time continuum, any two locations can virtually be right next to another. Portals have existed in Azeroth for eons. The largest of these can be found in the Blasted Lands, called the Dark Portal. Opened by Medivh many years ago, this portal was used to connect the worlds of Azeroth and the orc home world of Draenor (also known as the Outland). Knowledge of how to create such massive portals is now lost to the mortal races, however powerful mages are able to temporarily open much smaller portals to allow instantaneous travel.
The problem is that the destinations and sizes of the gates are very limited. At first mages can only move themselves through the folds. With time, the most powerful of mages can move entire armies through these gateways. This doesn’t mean travelers are free to come and go wherever they please. While these portals can be used nearly anywhere, their travel is distinctly designed for one-way usage and will deposit those who travel in very specific locations, namely inside the walls of major cities.
